The girl with the seagull, Opatija – Don’t miss

The story of the girl with the seagull starts in 1891 when Count Arthur Kesselstadt died in a shipwreck in front of Opatija. In his honor, the family built the statue of “Our Lady of the Sea” on a rock. Over time, the statue was destroyed and on its place was placed the “Girl with the seagull” in 1956. The locals call it the “nymph” because when the waves beat on the rock, the statue seems to emerge as a nymph. The statue is the work of the sculptor Zvonko Car whose model was Jelena Jendrasic from Crikvenica. The identity of the model remained unknown for 55 years.
